Perks of Working for a Marketing Agency

By Alexandra Dupuis-Buske on Nov 24, 2016 10:15:17 AM

Let's be honest, working for a marketing agency has its perks. I've only been working at Cyan Solutions for a few months now, and I've experienced some of these perks first hand.

There are three kinds of perks of working for a marketing agency:

  • Industry-related perks
  • Seasonal perks
  • Cyan-specific perks.

Industry-related Perks of Working for a Marketing Agency

These perks are pretty standard when working for a marketing agency, and are related to the type of work we do.

There's Always Something New

Thanks to the unique types of clients from various industries, we get to work on different projects all the time. Though not good for someone who hates change, the adaptive nature of most marketers fits well with this perk. Oh, and you're less likely to be bored!

Food and Drink

No, it's not like Mad Men but most marketing agencies like to get together at the end of the week, around 4pm, and share a laugh or two over food and drinks. As a non-drinker, I prefer the food, but also enjoy the time to get to know my coworkers. The best part? Every week, at Cyan, it's someone else's turn to provide the food (financed by Brent). We get to taste each other's favourite snacks.

Casual Weekdays

It's generally accepted in the marketing and advertising industry that your agency won't have a dress code.  That doesn't mean we dress like slobs but it does mean that we can wear jeans to work any day of the week.  Here in Ottawa, most other offices in other industries have dress codes (the federal government being the biggest employer) but those of us in marketing and advertising have the freedom to wear whatever makes us comfortable, creative and productive.

Seasonal Perks Of Working for a Marketing Agency

Whether it's winter or summer, there are a few things that Cyan likes to do with its employees. Though they may not be industry-wide, they're definitely worth the mention.

Seasonal Office Closures

Our industry tends to be busy in the Spring and in the Fall.  Those months are filled with long weeks, tight deadlines and late nights.  To balance this out, Cyan is like some other agencies and we close our offices on Friday afternoons in the summer.  When I started, we got to leave the office early on Fridays for our half-day Fridays. Now that they're over, I miss them a little. Leaving work a few hours early to enjoy the sunshine and spend time with family definitely brightens the end of the work week and makes it easier to survive the busier periods.

We also follow the industry practice of closing the office between Christmas and New Year's.  This is great because it gives us time to focus on recharging our batteries and be with family as we recover from the busy Fall and gear up for a big Spring.

Office Lunches

Most marketing and advertising agencies have a local restaurant they like to frequent as an office on a regular basis for lunch.  Often it's a "greasy spoon" or pub.  At Cyan, we like to visit one particular Vietnamese restaurant on Somerset in Chinatown.  They even save a table for us every Friday.  We've been doing this for years and have become quite close with the owners.

The Perks of Working at Cyan Solutions

We've talked about our regular perks, which help build the culture of our workplace, but we've also got some perks that come at random times around the year.

Birthday Lunches

Birthdays are a big deal here at Cyan. The boss takes us all out for a lunch to celebrate each employee's birthday, as they come around. The birthday person gets to pick their location, and lunch is on the boss. Everyone at Cyan is invited!

Mischief

Mischief is its own thing, where we like to get out into the community on random excursions of fun.  This summer we went and pimped bikes around town (with permission of course), spreading the love with bike horns and accessories.

For the past two years, at Halloween, we went out with Gord to scare the community. Read our blog to see what Gord and Mischief have in common

Not all the perks we have here at Cyan are Industry wide, but it doesn't stop us from being creative and having fun as a team. Want to see what else we offer our team?
